Photonics Explorer teaching kit in july/august newsletter Optica Society of America

An alarming number of young students are showing a lack of interest in science. If this trend continues, we may have a shortage of skilled scientists and engineers worldwide. The dearth of skilled professionals could become the key limiting factor in rapidly growing high-tech fields—like photonics.
In 2010, the European Commission funded the “EXPEKT” project to encourage young students to  develop an interest in science. It resulted in the development of the “Photonics Explorer”—an educational kit designed to work within the established European secondary school curriculum. It was  developed by photonics scientists at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, with the support of a pan-European partnership comprised of school teachers, experts in pedagogy, university scientists, industry representatives and the extended photonics community.
