Media, Information and Telecommunication (SMIT)

Publication date 24.01.2012

The SMIT (Studies on Media, Information and Telecommunication) research center was founded in 1990 at the VUB. Part of iMinds, SMIT specializes in academic research on media and ICT, with a specific focus on innovation, policy and socio-economic questions.

Currently, the research center has over 60 researchers. SMIT research combines user, policy and business analysis with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. In order to develop new methodological tools, a continuing dialectic between theory and empirical research is one of the center’s high-level objectives.

Living Labs SMIT research on user, business model and policy aspects of new media has led to the establishment of so-called Living Labs. A Living Lab is an open platform for real-life joint innovation by companies, users and public organizations.

The iBrussels Living Lab project, in which various VUB research centers were involved, successfully explored innovative mobile services on the university’s campus.

SMIT is now leading several European Living Lab projects, and hosting the headquarters of the European Network of Living Labs, which currently has 274 members.
