At the Green Energy Park in Zellik, the construction of Nexus has started. Nexus is the first green data centre in Belgium and is an initiative of VUB and UZ Brussels. Besides housing all the servers from VUB and UZ Brussels it will also accommodate the latest generation of supercomputers.
Sustainability was key in designing the building. First of all the energy used will be 100% renewable. Secondly, residual heat produced by the data centre will be recovered and used to heat surrounding houses. Lastly, rainwater will be used for cooling.
At the end of September, the first foundation stone was laid by VUB rector Jan Danckaert and Minister for Education and the Vlaamse Rand Ben Weyts. Now the construction has officially started and will be completed in 2023.
