Get to know Mimi Deprez

We would like to introduce you to Mimi, a member of our European Research and Innovation Support (ERIS) team within VUB TechTransfer. With over 30 years of experience in coordinating projects for academics, medical doctors and engineers pursuing research collaboratively and interdisciplinary, she is a valuable asset to our team. Mimi is excited to share her story with you today!

What is your role at VUB TechTransfer?

I am a member of the European Research and Innovation Support team within VUB TechTransfer.

What are your main responsibilities in this role?

I am on the one side giving support to academics who submit their applied research proposals to the EU and beyond. On the other side, I am involved in the MSCA-cofund Impact program dedicated to assist 20 postdocs to have an entrepreneurial mindset. I also write short communications about approved projects and internal procedures about ways of working enabling us to be efficient in our daily business as usual. Finally, I keep track of KPIs about submitted and approved projects.

How long have you been with VUB TechTransfer?

Since October 2021

As a fairly recent member of VUB TechTransfer, what are your initial impressions of the organization's approach to research and innovation, and what aspects of its operations do you find most interesting or exciting?

I see VUB TechTransfer organisation as a real team, where every Cell is connected aiming at translating research achievements into valorisation and societal outreach. Either with giving support in licensing IP, spin-off creations, or by assisting in creating impact in our global society. Here I am thinking about VUB researchers who while continuing their research passion -based on their approved funding proposals- become real world change makers. Topics are related to our direct daily challenges such as mobility and batteries, latest medical technologies and therapies developments but also managing cybersecurity, big data, GDPR, gender, and even democracy and world peace.  Exciting for me is for sure our strategy plan and its KPIs and how this enhance my commitment to VUB TechTransfer.

What is the project you are most proud of at TechTransfer?

When I started at the ERIS team I wanted to know the research topics of our top-notch researchers at VUB. So I have started to look for a helicopter view and match research keywords to members. Thus, it is fun to be able to put a name next to their expertise.

What is an ideal day off for you?

In my free time, I love to think about nothing and just do manual work such as repainting my attic, restructuring and cleaning some parcels in my garden, refurnishing or making some new curtains. As I love to chat with the people in my local community I usually try to meet some. My to do list would point to prepare the next Café Repair or coordinate a new project helping elderly people to connect and live in a caring neighbourhood, as such, safeguarding a good quality of life and age-friendly society.

Last but not least, we have to know, what is your favourite invention of all time?

The Digital area with capital D is part of my life!
I used to type up a doctoral thesis on a typewriter and gosh what a revolution today to have a computer with so many programs, a mobile phone with apps and digital tools to make your life and work so much easier. Did you have a glance to your watch today and saw how many steps you already made or just got a message ‘move' ?
